update no. 2
December 24, 2007 7:31 pm Random SuetHELLOOO it’s Christmas Eve in New York and I’m enjoyin every moment of it! It’s so beautiful right where I am now in this apartment cause I can see the whole city from the balcony! I’m not in an Apple store with 10 people staring at me while I type cause I’m using my French host’s laptop!
We’re gonna have a xmas eve party later woot! We went to Chinatown and found the best Msian restaurant called Nyonya! The char kuey teow was awesome!!!! and roti canai and roti telur and curry and chicken rice and everything else! We also went to a museum which was ho hum wtf. Museums are not my thing.
I love this placeeeee! We went to a broadway show which cost us around $100 per pax! But it was free for us cause my roommate’s dad paid for us! Americans are so generous mmm. And we ate at this expensive restaurant and he tipped $75!! That’s RM 300! o.0 omg it’s so nice to be rich. that’s just the tips ok! Whole meal was around $400 for 6 of us. RM 1300 *faints
Hmm what else have we been doing ah..erm we went Times Square which was great, 5th Avenue is great too and I think we’re gonna go see the statue of liberty tomorrow. Okay gotta go cook and clean like how a woman should wtf.
p.s: Love is..listening to The Beatles in a crowded subway in New York while holding your hand on christmas eve.

hmm.. the french host apt can see the city? whoa.. haha.. his place probably cost him 2-3 million bucks!! hahaha
the meal is pretty normal for 6 people in the big apple. besides its christmas season, the tips should be pretty high because waiters makes only tips and they are only paid 2-3 bucks an hour… which is the normal going rate.

It’s really amazing how generous some people can really be. Tipping just not our culture lah.

Tipping custom is 20% of the bill. I know.. i worked in the industry there before.
You could have gotten discounted tickets on the broadway show. Some of them have what they call “lottery” or even the student rush

tipping is a good appreciative gesture, sadly it’s hard for malaysians to adapt to such habits… i guess we have been burdened with so much “tax here, tax there” expenses that we just dont care about tipping…

ffiera: There is already an automatic 10% service charge on most restaurant bills in Malaysia. Whether or not the service is good.
In the US, the service is a different experience. One waiter usually gets assigned to your table for the entire meal. They get paid 2-3 bucks per hour as mentioned.
In Malaysia, hospitality is part of the culture. Waiters nowadays are usually polite. Even some of the foreign workers.
We don’t force the wait staff prance like circus animals or fake their sincerity or niceness just so that they can make more than the measly 2-3 bucks an hour.
It’s built in to the price of the meal, and the customers expect in good faith to receive good service. Otherwise they won’t go back.
Different culture. Not necessarily deficient.
